Manton, MI

Manton is a Wexford County city in northeastern Michigan, built along the proposed Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad route beside Cedar Creek. Ezra Harger, George Manton, and William Mears bought and cleared the townsite in 1872. Locals called the place Cedar Creek; the railroad station took the name Manton from its first postmaster, George Manton. That origin gives the city two maps at once: the creek corridor and the rail line that brought the settlement into the county's orbit.

Wexford County's government moved from Sherman to Manton in 1881, then Cadillac supporters came by special train in 1882 and seized the records after a fight at the courthouse. The Battle of Manton marker on US-131 keeps that episode visible. Today Cedar Creek Township wraps around the city, with the two governments administered separately. The useful orientation is simple: Manton is the civic grid inside a wider township landscape, and its creek-and-rail origin still tells you why it is here today.
