Maple Rapids, MI

Maple Rapids is a Clinton County village on the Maple River, where the 2020 census counted 573 residents. It lies northwest of St. Johns, and part of the village reaches into the Maple River State Game Area. The name is a direct geographic clue: the rapids on the Maple River gave the community its name, and the river still sets the village’s natural line.

In the early nineteenth century, Maketoquit and a large Ottawa band processed maple sugar in this part of Michigan. George Campau built a trading post here in 1826 and used the river’s rapids in the name, linking the settlement to both commerce and the waterway. Maple Rapids grew from that meeting of river, trade, and seasonal work. Today the game area, riverbank, and roads toward St. Johns keep the village connected to the larger Clinton County landscape. Its name still points straight to the feature that made the place recognizable. The village remains small, but the river gives it a name people can picture immediately.
