About Mapleton

Mapleton is a Blue Earth County city on the Maple River, part of the Mankato metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,710 residents. The city was platted in 1871 when the railroad reached the site, so its origin is easy to picture: a river valley, a new rail line, and a town laid out around the chance that people and freight would follow. State Highways 22 and 30 still run through the city.

Maple River Senior High School gives the city a local center, while the river keeps the name tied to the landscape. Mapleton has the look of a southern Minnesota rail town, with farm country on all sides and the larger Mankato area close enough for work, shopping, and school connections. The original bargain remains visible: the railroad put Mapleton on the map, and the river kept the map's name. The city still carries a rail-town cadence in its streets. The river and highways keep the old layout legible.
