About Mapleton
Mapleton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the Siuslaw River, where Oregon 126 meets Oregon 36 about halfway between Eugene and Florence. The river is more than a backdrop here: it was the route through the valley, and the community's early twentieth-century economy leaned on timber, including the Davidson Industries sawmill. The name is commonly tied to the area's bigleaf maple trees, a detail that fits the river-bottom setting. Mapleton's water district, formed in 1951, grew alongside the sawmill and has had to rebuild after landslides, floods, and fires. Today the town's identity is a mix of river crossing, forest roads, and the small services that hold this stretch of the Siuslaw Valley together.
