Marblemount, WA

Marblemount sits at the confluence of the Cascade and Skagit rivers in the upper Skagit Valley, surrounded by Lookout Mountain and the Helen Buttes. The 2020 census counted 286 residents. Indigenous people lived at the site before naturalist George Gibbs explored the region in 1858; a Euro-American community formed in the 1870s as a supply point for miners working the Skagit and Cascade drainages. Today State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, carries travelers through the CDP toward North Cascades National Park and the mountain communities east of the valley.

The rivers still organize the place. The Cascade enters the Skagit at Marblemount, and the surrounding roads follow watercourses into forests, recreation areas, and former mining country. The community's small commercial center serves residents, highway travelers, river users, and people heading into the North Cascades, giving the settlement a wider seasonal role than its population suggests. Marblemount's history is visible in that same arrangement: a river junction that began as a mining supply stop and now stands at the meeting point of a working valley, a mountain highway, and the national park landscape.
