Mardela Springs, MD

Mardela Springs sits on Barren Creek in Wicomico County, between Salisbury and Cambridge and a short drive from U.S. 50. The town's older story reaches back to Nanticoke and Puckamee communities and to the springs that drew trade. European fur traders used the waterways; in 1842, Barren Creek Springs Presbyterian Church gave the settlement a durable gathering place. The railroad later turned Mardela Springs into a stop for travelers headed toward Ocean City, with boarding houses, shops, blacksmiths, and shipyards clustered around the route.

Mardela Middle and High School is now one of the town's major institutions, while the Heritage Museum on Main Street keeps local artifacts and memories in circulation. Westside Historical Society programs bring people together with the Adkins Historical and Museum Complex and the volunteer fire company for events rooted in the western shore of the county. The creek, school, museum, and old transportation routes give Mardela Springs a clear shape: a small Eastern Shore town whose present-day calendar still grows from water, travel, education, and the layers of people who have lived along Barren Creek.
