Marengo, IA

Marengo has been Iowa County’s seat since August 1845, even though the city did not incorporate until 1859. It was laid out in the same period and took its name from the Battle of Marengo, where Napoleon defeated the Austrian army. That is a very European name for a small Iowa city, but the local setting is thoroughly Midwestern: the Iowa River passes north of town, farms surround the county seat, and the courthouse still gives the center its purpose. The 2020 census counted 2,435 residents.

The detail people remember is the library. Marengo’s Carnegie library opened in 1905 after Andrew Carnegie gave the city $10,000, and the Jacobean Revival building is still standing and still used as a library. Around it, the city mixes county government, Iowa Valley schools, Gateway Park and Preserve, and an industrial business park on the Interstate Railroad line. You can fish, kayak, hike, or watch birds at Gateway Park, then be back in town for courthouse errands or a library stop. Marengo feels like a place that kept its civic pieces close: county seat, river town, school town, and Carnegie library all sharing one compact map.
