About Margaretville

Margaretville occupies the East Branch Delaware River valley in the Town of Middletown, on the edge of Catskill Park. New York Route 30 runs through the village, while Route 28 connects the valley toward Kingston and the larger Catskills. The area entered colonial records through the Hardenburgh Patent in 1708, then developed through farming, mills, general stores, and stagecoach travel. The river gave the village its route and its work, and later roads turned Margaretville into a service center for the mountain communities around it.

Today the village is a base for Catskill Park trips, river fishing, paddling, hiking, and drives through Delaware County. Main Street businesses, the Margaretville Messenger’s long local history, shops, restaurants, schools, and community services keep the center useful for year-round residents, while visitors arrive for the mountains and the East Branch. Kingston and Oneonta extend the regional orbit, but Margaretville’s daily scale remains that of a river village: a few roads, a strong main street, and a landscape that sends people in and out with the seasons.
