Maricopa, CA

Maricopa sits at the southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, five miles south-southeast of Taft, where the valley rises toward the Temblor Range and San Emigdio Mountains. The Carrizo Plain opens to the northwest, while the Midway-Sunset Oil Field surrounds the city's north and east sides. That geography makes Maricopa feel like an oil-field town with a desert-and-mountain horizon: pump jacks and service roads in one direction, open ranges and fault-country ridges in another.

The post office opened in 1901, the Sunset Western Railroad arrived with the oil boom, and Maricopa incorporated in 1911. The city still carries that petroleum history, including the Lakeview Gusher story and the field that remains California's largest. Taft is close for school, shopping, and daily errands, while the Carrizo Plain and mountain roads pull the other way. Maricopa's local texture comes from working infrastructure - wells, rail grades, highway traffic, and field roads - set against a landscape where the Coast Ranges begin almost at the edge of town.
