Marion, KS

Marion is the seat of Marion County and the county's oldest settlement. Settlers in five covered wagons arrived in 1860 after being told the prairie southwest of Emporia held good farmland; George Griffith built the first shanty near today's Santa Fe Depot Library. The post office called the settlement Marion Centre in 1862, then dropped "Centre" in 1881. The 1906 limestone courthouse remains in use, keeping county government at the center of the town.

Marion's landscape carries several versions of Kansas history at once. The city sits at the edge of the Flint Hills and the Great Plains, with the Cottonwood River running through the county's story. Marion County Park and Lake was built during the Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Kansas Emergency Relief Committee, including African American veterans and Junior African American CCC members; the lake was completed in 1937 for flood control and recreation and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown life still leans on the courthouse, depot library, Marion County Historical Museum, and Old Settlers Day, while Santa Fe Trail sites point to older routes across the prairie.
