Marion, MS

Marion is a small Lauderdale County town on the east side of the Meridian area, with 1,751 residents in the 2020 census. It is surrounded on three sides by Meridian and sits close enough to downtown—about five miles via Dale Drive—that many errands spill across the town line. Marion was the county seat from its founding through Reconstruction, and the name honors Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War figure remembered as the “Swamp Fox.” Sowashee Creek forms the town’s eastern edge before flowing southwest through Meridian into the Chickasawhay River system. That mix of old county history and modern suburban adjacency is the key to Marion.

The current town is practical and service-oriented: town hall, water billing, police, volunteer fire protection, local businesses, and road connections all serve a residential community folded into Meridian’s orbit. The town’s position gives it room to keep its own identity while still using Meridian for larger shopping, jobs, and regional services. Marion does not need a separate downtown spectacle to make sense; its story is in the county-seat past, the creek at the edge, the short drive into Meridian, and the municipal work that keeps a small town functioning inside a larger city’s shadow.
