Marion, SD

Marion is a Turner County city about 35 miles southwest of Sioux Falls. The 2020 census counted 849 residents. Marion Public School provides the local K–12 school, while the city office, utility system, and small businesses handle the routine work of town life. Hieb Memorial Park gives the community a shared field of activity, with a playground, swimming pool, camping, and twin softball fields. Farm roads and county routes connect Marion with Parker, Hurley, and the larger Sioux Falls area.

The city was laid out in 1879 and named for a railroad employee's daughter, a reminder of how closely the town's beginning followed the rail lines across Turner County. The railroad era has given way to school schedules, utility bills, ball games, and trips out of town for larger shopping or medical appointments, but the compact civic pattern remains. Marion's park and school sit alongside the practical services that keep a small county community going. It is a southeastern South Dakota town with a simple local rhythm: school in the middle, the park nearby, and the county road network leading toward Sioux Falls.
