Marion, WI

Marion grew from J. W. Perry’s 1867 sawmill on the edge of the woods and farmland of Waupaca and Shawano counties. A post office called Perry’s Mill opened in 1872, the first plat took the Marion name in 1876, and the railroad arrived in 1879. The community became a village in 1898 and a city in 1939. That sequence still shows how the city took shape: lumber, rail, agriculture, and local trade came first, then schools and services filled in around them.

Marion now has an industrial base, retail and professional services, a school district with elementary, middle, and high schools, and a sizeable Amish community that settled in the area in 1995. Marion Pond, trout streams, hunting ground, and nearby woods bring outdoor life into the local calendar, while Highways 45 and 110 and County S connect the city to Green Bay, Wausau, Appleton, and Stevens Point. The city sits in a useful middle distance from all four. Its routines are a blend of plant shifts, school events, farm roads, pond time, and the errands that keep a regional crossroads moving.
