Mariposa, CA

Tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills at around 2,000 feet, Mariposa is a charming mountain town with about 1,500 residents. The community grew out of an 1849 Gold Rush camp and quickly developed into the region's main gathering place. Today, it remains the local county seat, anchored by California’s oldest continuously operating courthouse built in 1854. Daily life here moves at an easy pace, with scenic wooded hills and a friendly, neighborly feel.

The historic main street gives the town plenty of character, lined with cozy diners, independent shops, and 19th-century landmarks like St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The area also honors its Southern Sierra Miwok heritage, keeping traditions alive with events like the annual Mother's Day Pow-Wow. With Yosemite National Park just up Highway 140, residents enjoy incredible access to hiking and outdoor adventures while returning home to a grounded, tight-knit mountain community.
