Mariposa, CA

Mariposa is the unincorporated county seat of Mariposa County, at about 2,015 feet in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The 2020 census counted 1,526 residents. The town began as a mining camp on Mariposa Creek, and a flood during the winter of 1849 pushed the settlement onto higher ground. From there, the courthouse and the road through town made Mariposa a supply and legal center for the mining districts around it. The 1854 courthouse still matters to the story: it has remained the seat of county government for more than 160 years, and early mining cases helped shape American mining law.

The older layers are still visible along the main street. The Mariposa Town Historic District includes the courthouse and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, whose Carpenter Gothic building dates to 1863. Before the Gold Rush, Southern Sierra Miwok communities lived in this country; the annual Mother's Day Pow-Wow keeps a living Miwok tradition in the calendar. The name Mariposa came from a Spanish priest traveling with Gabriel Moraga in 1806, and the butterfly meaning has stayed attached to the place. Yosemite sits up the road, so visitors pass through, but Mariposa's county-seat, mining, and Indigenous history give the town its own center of gravity.
