Marks, MS

Marks is the seat of Quitman County in the Mississippi Delta, a city whose courthouse square sits inside a larger story of railroads, cotton, race, and migration. Leopold Marks, a German immigrant who arrived in New York in 1868, gave the city its name, and the county courthouse moved here in 1911 as the new town outgrew older county centers. The courthouse, built in 1910–11, remains a Mississippi Landmark, while the Marks Downtown Historic District gathers commercial, agricultural, transportation, and government buildings around the central business district.

Marks has also been a stage for civil-rights organizing. Local school history includes a Rosenwald School, and in 1968 students and teachers marched through downtown during a local protest, linking the town to a national movement rooted in the Delta. Today Quitman County schools, county offices, churches, and small businesses share the same compact geography. Restoration work includes the courthouse, the Marks Rosenwald School, and a cultural trail connected to the Mule Train story. Marks carries county business and memory in the same few blocks.
