Marksboro, NJ

Marksboro is a census-designated place in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, set along Route 94 and the Paulins Kill. The 2020 census counted 186 residents. Settlement and naming reach back before 1760, when the creek was still doing much of the work of the community's map. Today the place remains a linear northwestern New Jersey village, with farm roads, wooded slopes, and the waterway running alongside its older center.

Marksboro takes its name from Colonel Mark Thompson, who built and owned a grist mill on the Paulins Kill before 1760. The first store belonged to William Shafer, and the mill and store gave the settlement the practical pieces of a small rural center. The creek also tied Marksboro to a wider milling landscape along the Paulins Kill, where grain, timber, and local traffic moved through the valley. Marksboro is small, but its name still points to the mill, the road, and the stream that made this part of Warren County a place to gather.
