Marshallberg, NC

Marshallberg is a Carteret County census-designated place at the southeastern tip of a mainland peninsula, where Core Sound meets the Straits. Sleepy Creek bounds the community to the west and Great Marsh Creek reaches in from the northeast; across Core Sound are Harkers Island and the waters toward Cape Lookout. The 2020 census counted 341 residents, and one road connects Marshallberg with the rest of Down East Carteret County.

The water has always set the town's work. Marshallberg was once called Deep Hole Point, after a dredged place in Sleepy Creek, and became Marshallberg when the post office took the name of mail-boat captain Matt Marshall. Seafood packing, tomato canneries, crab processing, boatbuilding, and commercial fishing shaped the twentieth century. A shipyard operated for much of the century, and the community still has a post office, fish houses, boat work, churches, and homes with the broad porches associated with the Core Sound coast. Marshallberg faces the sound every day, whether the work is on shore or afloat.
