Martindale, TX

Martindale is a city in Caldwell County on the San Marcos River, within the Austin metropolitan region. The 2020 Census counted 1,253 residents. Nancy Martindale established the town in 1855 by donating land for the town site, and Martindale incorporated as a city in 1982. Agriculture shaped the early economy: by 1890 the town had four general stores, four gristmills, and cotton gins, while seed companies near Martindale supplied more than 65 percent of Texas’s hybrid seed corn in 1949 along with a large share of the state’s pedigreed cottonseed.

The river and downtown carry that history into the present. Martindale created its Historic Landmark District in 2008, protecting a core of older buildings around Main Street, and city parks provide access to the San Marcos River. San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District serves local students, with Hope Christian Academy providing another school option. The river draws regional recreation, the historic district keeps the agricultural town center legible, and the seed industry ties Martindale’s past to both the riverbank and the farm fields beyond town.
