Massillon, OH

Massillon was shaped by the Tuscarawas River and the boom times of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Founded in the early 1800s alongside the Quaker settlement of Kendal, the town quickly earned the nickname "Wheat City" as canal boats hauled regional grain and coal across the state. Spring Hill Historic Home still stands on the north side, preserving the Rotch family farm that once served as a safe haven on the Underground Railroad. Today, that waterway heritage lives on along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, which winds right past downtown.

The local economy has evolved from its early steel roots into a healthy mix of food processing, packaging, and light manufacturing. Major names like Shearer's Foods, Fresh Mark, Kraft Heinz, and Sterilite keep a strong presence in town, offering steady local employment. Commuting is easy, with State Routes 21 and 30 providing direct access to Canton, Akron, and Interstate 77. Everyday shopping and local eateries are clustered along Lincoln Way downtown, with larger retail plazas and grocery options spread toward the outskirts.

Massillon is best known for its deep-rooted high school football culture, centered on the historic Washington High Tigers and the legacy of legendary coach Paul Brown. Downtown, the Massillon Museum celebrates that gridiron pride alongside regional art exhibits, local history galleries, and family workshops. Right nearby, the historic Lincoln Theatre hosts classic movies and live stage shows, while outdoor enthusiasts have immediate access to both the Towpath and Sippo Valley trails for walking, running, and biking.
