Matlacha, FL

Matlacha is a Lee County census-designated place on West Island and Porpoise Point Island, where County Road 78 crosses Matlacha Pass between Pine Island and the mainland. The 2020 census counted 598 residents. Fishing, seafood businesses, small island shops, galleries, and traditional Florida cottages give the narrow community its recognizable working-waterfront shape, while Cape Coral and Fort Myers supply the larger metropolitan orbit. The recent local story is recovery. Hurricane Ian damaged Matlacha in 2022, and later storms Helene and Milton added more work; Lee County’s Matlacha Park Community Center and art building reopened in March 2026 after extensive renovation.

The park’s fishing pier has fish-cleaning stations, keeping the water-based routine visible even as buildings and infrastructure are repaired. County Road 78 is the bridge connection that carries both residents and visitors across the pass.
