Matoaka, WV

Matoaka is a small, quiet community tucked into the hills of southern West Virginia, about 20 miles northwest of Princeton. Settled along Widemouth Creek, the area grew rapidly in the early 1900s as a bustling rail and coal hub, taking its name from the traditional name for Pocahontas. Today, it offers a slow-paced, rural setting surrounded by rugged Mercer County countryside. The old storefronts and historic rail lines still reflect the community's deep Appalachian roots.
