About Matthews
Matthews is a town in Jefferson Township, Grant County, Indiana, United States, along the Mississinewa River. The 2020 census counted 494 residents. Matthews was founded in 1895 and named in honor of then-governor Claude Matthews. Now the "old town" of Matthews, the village has a wooden covered bridge, the Cumberland Covered Bridge, built in 1877 which crosses the Mississinewa River. The town has a lending library, the Matthews Public Library. The short version is that Matthews carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Matthews: its past remains attached to the places people use now. Matthews is located along the Mississinewa River.
