Maumee, OH

Maumee is a Lucas County city on the Maumee River, just southwest of Toledo. The river made the location before the city did: Maumee's first post office opened in 1810, the city incorporated in 1838, and the first bridge between Maumee and Perrysburg followed in that same year. By 1848, 3,753 boats passed through Maumee, a number that captures how much the river shaped the young city's business.

Current Maumee still follows the river. Towpath Park runs along the Maumee from White Street to Ford Street, with fishing, cycling, and the annual walleye run. Side Cut Metropark preserves the former canal side cut and original locks, while Union Park at 102 Conant Street sits by the former Union Elementary building. City offices at 400 Conant Street connect utilities, parks, refuse, and other local services. Maumee's working map is a riverfront city with a canal trace under the park, a civic spine on Conant Street, and Perrysburg across the water. The old shipping route remains visible in the places where residents gather, walk, fish, and cross the river.
