Maxwell, CA

Maxwell is a Colusa County farm community in the middle of California's Central Valley, just off Interstate 5. The 2020 Census counted 1,067 residents. Rice is the main crop, with grapes, almonds, olives, squash, and sunflowers in the surrounding fields. The town's railroad-era origin is unusually clear: the Northern Railway planned a station at Stone Corral Road, while a competing map briefly called the settlement Occident. The post office was named Maxwell from the start, and the railroad company settled on Maxwell in 1878, honoring George Maxwell.

Stone Corral is more than an old street name. About six miles west of town sits Swift's Stone Corral, built in 1850 by Granville P. Swift and Frank Sears from flat local stones because timber was scarce; California recognizes it as a historical landmark. That older ranching site and the newer grid of rice fields tell Maxwell's story in two layers. It grew around a railroad and still lives by the agricultural calendar, with the high, open valley doing as much of the talking as the town's few blocks.
