About May

May is a Harper County town at the intersection of State Highway 46 and U.S. 270/412, 21 miles southwest of Buffalo. A store and post office followed the 1893 Cherokee Outlet opening; the town was platted in 1902 and incorporated in 1913. The Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway made May a wheat-shipping point in 1912, and cattle and wheat remained central to its economy after the line was abandoned in 1972. May lies just south of the Beaver River and east of Otter Creek, where flooding repeatedly shaped the town.
