Maysville, NC

Maysville is a Jones County town on the White Oak River, with U.S. 17 running through its center. The 2020 census counted 818 residents. The highway leads north toward New Bern and southwest toward Jacksonville, while the river and surrounding farmland keep the town tied to southeastern Jones County. Maysville Elementary School and Frost Park are present-day institutions within town, and nearby Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point shape the wider commuter and military region.

Originally Young's Crossroads, Maysville took its current name from John D. May, whose family helped establish an elementary school on the Jones County side of the river. The town incorporated in 1897. Railroad service arrived in the late nineteenth century and gave the river crossing a commercial connection to New Bern and Wilmington; that line was abandoned in the 1990s. Today, U.S. 17, school traffic, local businesses and churches, and the White Oak River give Maysville its practical shape. Town offices and a recurring events calendar give that river crossing a current civic rhythm.
