Mayville, ND

Mayville is the largest community in Traill County, North Dakota, on the Goose River in the Red River Valley. The 2020 census counted 1,854 residents. The city was founded in 1881 and named for May Arnold, the first white child born in the immediate area. Mayville State University gives the town a campus rhythm and a wider reach than its population suggests, with students, faculty, athletics, and community programs mixing into the local week. The valley was once part of glacial Lake Agassiz, and the Goose River still shapes the city’s low, open landscape. Island Park is Mayville’s everyday outdoor center, while the Mayville State Comets and May-Port CG schools keep the education side visible.

The city sits about halfway between Grand Forks and Fargo, with Portland right next door as its sister community; the two share recreation, events, and regional services. Downtown, the university, Island Park, the Goose River, and the farm roads beyond town make up a compact but useful map.
