Mazon, IL

Mazon shares its name with one of Illinois' most distinctive fossil landscapes. The Mazon Creek area in Grundy County preserves an unusually broad record of Pennsylvanian plants and animals, including the Tully Monster, Illinois' state fossil. The name Mazon comes from a Potawatomi word for nettles, and the village grew in the rail era around the Santa Fe's Mazon Depot. That puts two very different time scales on the same local map: ancient fossil beds in the surrounding countryside and a late-19th-century village grid built for trains.

Present-day Mazon is easy to read through a few village places. Mazon Centennial Park has two baseball fields, a playground, pavilions, basketball, and tennis or pickleball courts; Primrose Park adds a catch-and-release fishing pond. The American Legion on Depot Street has hosted village meetings, while Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Elementary District 2C and Seneca Township High School District 160 serve local students. The parks and school districts make the town's routines easy to picture, while the creek's fossils give Mazon a scientific story far beyond its size.
