McBain, MI

McBain is a Missaukee County city that began around John McBain's sawmill in 1887. The Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway reached a station here in 1888, and a post office called Owens opened that same year; rail and mail helped turn a timber settlement into a city. The 2020 census counted 637 residents, making McBain one of Michigan's smallest cities. It lies ten miles south of Lake City, the county seat, and about 13 miles east-southeast of Cadillac. The railway gave the new settlement a place on the regional map.

Education gives the town a distinct present-day shape. McBain Rural Agricultural School serves local students, and Northern Michigan Christian School has taught in town since 1911 with programs from preschool through high school. That mix puts public rural education and a century-old private Christian school on the same small map. McBain's history is still readable in its name, rail origin, and school institutions: a sawmill town whose civic life grew around education after the first timber and track connections.
