McClure, PA

McClure is a Snyder County borough whose story begins with a railroad and a piece of Middlecreek Valley farmland. The settlement was first called Stuckton after George Stuck, whose farm was laid out for lots in 1867 as the railroad approached. The Sunbury and Lewistown Railroad eventually ran through the center, and the town took the name McClure for Pennsylvania politician and journalist Alexander Kelly McClure. The borough incorporated in 1967, decades after the town itself had taken shape.

Railroad history still has a physical place in McClure's civic life, but the current calendar is more local. Borough offices handle permits, meetings, water, sewer, and road matters; the volunteer fire company serves as a polling place; and the McClure Bean Soup Festival and Fair, founded in 1883, remains the signature annual gathering. The borough's historical society works on school, railroad, and early industry stories, while the swimming pool and Hometown Hero program add present-day touchpoints. McClure feels like a small Snyder County borough with an old rail line under its history and a full community calendar above it.
