McDonald is a borough with one foot in Allegheny County and the other in Washington County, about 18 miles west of Pittsburgh. The 2020 census counted 2,056 residents. Robinson Run crosses the southeastern edge, and the borough’s landscape is wooded and relatively flat, but the old local economy came from below ground: oil and coal were extracted here and in the surrounding area.
