McDonald, TN

McDonald is a Bradley County community west-southwest of Cleveland, stretched along U.S. 11 and U.S. 64 in the rolling countryside between Chattanooga and Cleveland. The settlement dates to about 1850, and its name still has several explanations: a Scottish trader, a railroad builder, or a local resident's mother. McDonald's Station appeared in an 1887 description as a small railroad village, while mineral springs once brought visitors to area resorts.

Bendabout Farm is the big local surprise. The Johnston family has held the property since the 1830s, and the farm's polo grounds have hosted tournaments since 1972; Bendabout Polo Club keeps that horse-country tradition visible today. The Tri-State Exhibition Center adds another equestrian and events connection nearby, while the post office and Bradley County roads keep McDonald tied to everyday errands. Bachman Academy's former campus also belongs to the community's history, tracing back to a 1912 school and home for children before the academy closed. McDonald is a rural crossroads with an unusually strong horse-and-school backstory.
