McIntosh, FL

McIntosh sits in northern Marion County, with Orange Lake forming its eastern edge and the Ocala metropolitan area nearby. Its early story passes through two very different chapters. Colonel John Houstoun McIntosh established a plantation here in the early 1820s, but Seminoles destroyed it and burned his sugar mill during the Second Seminole War. In 1849, Baltimore merchant Nehemiah Brush bought 4,000 acres of the Arrendondo Spanish land grant at auction, bringing a large piece of the future town under one owner.

The Florida Southern Railway arrived in 1881, followed by a depot in 1885. Citrus and vegetables moved out by rail, while Orange Lake drew visitors for hunting and fishing. McIntosh incorporated in 1913, and the last train passed through in 1974. Several hard freezes changed the agricultural picture, pushing the area toward cattle and horses as orange groves faded. The town counted 463 residents in 2020, and its lakefront setting still links everyday life to the wider north-central Florida landscape.
