McIntosh, MN

McIntosh is a Polk County city in northwestern Minnesota, about 60 miles east of Grand Forks and 50 miles west of Bemidji. The 2020 census counted 606 people. Its roots go back to 1883, when the county opened thirteen townships for settlement; King Township, which included McIntosh, was one of them. The village took its name from A. J. McIntosh, a Scottish man who had immigrated from French Canada. Today the city sits within the Grand Forks, North Dakota-Minnesota metropolitan area, at the edge of the Red River Valley and the farm country of Polk County.

Transportation still gives the city its shape. U.S. Highway 2 runs through town, Minnesota 59 is five miles west, and the BNSF Railway's east-west main line passes through McIntosh. The city maintains a community center for events, along with parks and local businesses, while the nearby East Polk Heritage Center preserves the history of the original thirteen townships. McIntosh works as a small regional stop where the settlement grid, rail line, highway, and community center meet in a landscape tied to farming and the larger Grand Forks-Bemidji corridor.
