McLouth, KS

McLouth is a Jefferson County city that got its name from Amos McLouth, the original owner of the town site. The settlement took shape in the 1880s, and its post office opened in May 1882. The railroad once ran right through the middle of town, and its old alignment still gives McLouth a simple north-side/south-side split. That detail is worth noticing because it gives McLouth a street plan organized around one straight seam rather than a grand courthouse square. Farms surround town, while Lawrence, Topeka, Leavenworth, and the Kansas City suburbs are all within a regional drive.

The school campus is the biggest piece of present-day community geography. McLouth USD 342 keeps elementary, middle, and high school together, so games, band events, and school errands happen in one place. Rose Park adds a disc-golf course and play space, with two more parks filling out the recreation map. McLouth is the kind of northeast Kansas town where an old rail line, a school campus, and a handful of everyday businesses still tell you how the place works.
