Medford, NY

Medford's railroad stop came before most of the community around it. The Long Island Rail Road established the station in 1843 in the Central Pine Barrens, where it met the stage road between Patchogue and Port Jefferson; a post office followed. In 1907, the railroad created an 80-acre demonstration farm to prove that crops could be raised in the sandy Pine Barrens soil. The station remains a marker of that origin within a much larger present-day hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven. Population changed little between the 2010 and 2020 censuses, from 24,142 to 24,247. A major recent civic addition sits north of the tracks. Patchogue-Medford Library opened its Medford Branch at the Medford Athletic Complex in June 2024, following years in which neighborhood library service operated from a school.

The branch uses solar panels, high-efficiency heating and cooling, natural light, and an outdoor patio. The library maintains a dedicated Spanish-services contact, and its 2026 calendar included bilingual crafts, sensory-and-sports sessions, family programs, and makerspace activities. The surrounding Brookhaven complex contains ballfields, a multipurpose field, and a playground; the town's 2026 capital plan funded replacement netting, batting cages, and landscaping for the frequently used facility. This node is served by Suffolk County Transit route 55 at Route 112 and Horseblock Road, and the library is about 1.1 miles north of the LIRR station.
