Medicine Lodge, KS

Medicine Lodge is Barber County's seat in south-central Kansas, where the Medicine Lodge River meets Elm Creek below the red Gypsum Hills. The city's name reaches back to a Kiowa ceremonial shelter near the river, and the 1867 Medicine Lodge Treaty was signed near the present-day community. That history is handled locally through Memorial Peace Park and the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Pageant, a large outdoor performance held every three years. The event is not a generic frontier show; it points back to a specific council involving Native nations and the United States, and the location still matters.

Between pageant years, Medicine Lodge is a working county seat with City Hall, the Barber County courthouse, schools, a city pool, a municipal airport, local businesses, churches, and the roads that carry traffic along U.S. 160 and 281.
