Medicine Lodge, KS

Tucked into the rugged red mesas of the Gypsum Hills in south-central Kansas, Medicine Lodge offers a landscape that surprises anyone expecting flat prairie. The town takes its name from a sacred Kiowa ceremonial shelter that once stood along the river, and it is best known as the site of the historic 1867 Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty. Every three years, the entire community comes together to stage a massive outdoor pageant at Memorial Peace Park, drawing visitors from across the region to celebrate the area's deep Native American and frontier heritage.
