About Melbourne
Melbourne is a home rule-class city in Campbell County on the south bank of the Ohio River; the 2020 census counted 458 residents. Silver Grove borders it to the west, Coldstream, Ohio, sits across the river, and Kentucky Route 8 follows the water toward Dayton and Augusta. Downtown Cincinnati is about 11 miles northwest, so the city sits in a narrow river corridor with a direct line into the larger Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati region.
The St. Anne Convent gives Melbourne its best-known cultural landmark. It is home to the American Province of the Congregation of Divine Providence, and scenes from the 1988 film Rain Man were filmed there. The convent remains a working local landmark for the city. City council and municipal services provide the local civic layer, while the Ohio River and Route 8 define how Melbourne connects outward. The result is a small city whose map is shaped by a convent, a riverbank highway, and the larger metro just upstream.
