UC Merced brings a youthful, forward-looking energy to town. As the newest campus in the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century, the school has steadily expanded since opening in 2005. Today, nearly 10,000 students attend classes on a modern campus bordered by vast protected grasslands and scenic vernal pool reserves. It stays well connected to the rest of the city, with university shuttles and local buses making it easy to travel between campus neighborhoods, shopping centers, and downtown.

Downtown Merced offers a welcoming mix of classic Central Valley history and local spots to explore. The central blocks feature historic architecture, casual eateries, and indie shops centered around the iconic Merced Theatre. Originally opened in 1931 and beautifully restored in recent years, the vintage venue hosts live concerts, stand-up comedy, film screenings, and university arts performances. The area also draws regular crowds for fresh produce, with weekly certified farmers' markets setting up on Wednesday mornings at the Promenade and Saturday mornings in the heart of downtown.

Beyond the city center, agriculture defines daily life across Merced County. Sprawling orchards, dairies, and farm fields surround the community, anchoring the regional economy and giving the area a grounded, open feel. This farming heritage also connects directly to the local landscape. Just southwest of the city sits the Merced National Wildlife Refuge, a expansive sanctuary originally established in the 1950s to provide protected habitat for migratory birds alongside neighboring farm fields.

The refuge is one of the area's favorite outdoor escapes, free to visit and open daily from sunrise to sunset. You can take in the scenery from your car along a five-mile driving loop or stretch your legs on walking trails that wind past wetlands, riparian trees, and open plains. Elevated viewing decks with spotting scopes offer great angles for birdwatchers and photographers, especially from late autumn through February. During these peak winter months, tens of thousands of sandhill cranes and geese fill the skies, making it a great destination for an afternoon drive.
