Mercer Island, WA

Mercer Island sits right in the middle of Lake Washington, perfectly positioned between Seattle and Bellevue. Interstate 90 cuts across the northern tip of the island, and the arrival of the 2 Line light rail makes getting around the region easier than ever. Trains run regularly across the floating bridge, whisking passengers to downtown Bellevue in about ten minutes or straight into Seattle without having to fight freeway traffic. With the Mercer Island Station located steps from local shops and the Mountains to Sound Greenway trail, commuters have a fast, convenient way to get where they need to go.

Waterways and bridges have always shaped daily routines on the island. In the late 1800s, early homesteaders rowed across the lake to Seattle for supplies, while steamboats hauled heavier cargo. Ferries and lakeside resorts soon turned the island into a quiet weekend getaway, but everything changed in 1940 with the opening of the first floating bridge. That direct road connection helped Mercer Island evolve into one of the region's premier residential communities, offering a peaceful, wooded setting just minutes from major job centers.

Most local shopping, dining, and community activity centers around the north end in Town Center. This walkable village core is home to local cafes, grocery stores, medical offices, and modern apartment buildings. Just down the block, Mercerdale Park provides a welcoming green space that comes alive on Sundays during the Mercer Island Farmers Market, where neighbors gather for fresh produce, artisan baked goods, and live music. South of Town Center, the island transitions into quiet, leafy residential streets filled with spacious single-family homes and neighborhood parks.

Outdoor recreation and local gatherings are a huge part of what makes the island feel like home. Every July, the annual Summer Celebration festival brings residents out for family games at Mercerdale Park before shifting to Luther Burbank Park for evening fireworks. Spanning 77 acres along the northeastern shore, Luther Burbank Park is a favorite weekend destination with its swim beaches, off-leash dog park, lakeside walking trails, and open-air amphitheater. It offers plenty of room to picnic, paddle on the lake, or simply enjoy sweeping waterfront views.
