Mercer Island, WA

Mercer Island sits in Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue, and its main regional corridor crosses straight through the island. Interstate 90 arrives by floating bridge from the west and continues toward the Eastside. On March 28, 2026, Sound Transit added rail to that corridor when the completed 2 Line began carrying passengers across Lake Washington. This was the first time a metro line had carried passengers across a floating bridge. Mercer Island Station lies between the freeway's eastbound and westbound lanes beside the Park-and-Ride and Town Center. Entrances at 77th and 80th avenues Southeast reach the retail core and the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail. Sound Transit lists a ten-minute trip from the island to Bellevue Downtown, giving the community a direct rail connection on the same axis long used by road traffic.

Transportation has repeatedly changed how settlement worked here. A federal survey recorded the Mercer name in 1860, and non-Indigenous settlement began in the late 1870s, when island households reached Seattle by rowboat and received larger supplies from occasional steamers. C. C. Calkins platted East Seattle on the western shore and built a hotel in 1891; ferry service then made the island easier to reach. Public water travel continued until the first Lake Washington floating bridge opened in 1940. The island's municipal history also began with a division. Most island voters created a city in July 1960, the northern business district formed a separate town in August, and the two governments merged in 1970.

The island's commercial life is concentrated near its northern bridge connection. Most of the island is residential, with single-family areas extending south from a northern concentration of shops, services, offices, and multifamily housing. Town Center is the island's principal commercial district, and the new station's west entrance is a short walk from its retail core. Mercerdale Park sits nearby and hosts the Mercer Island Farmers Market. Its 2026 music program began on the May 31 opening day and included solo performers as well as full bands. Through the summer, Sunday market dates brought growers, prepared-food vendors, and music to the park lawn. The station, retail core, and market park now cluster at the north end, with the island's long residential stretches continuing south from them.

Summer Celebration makes that north-end geography especially visible. On July 11, 2026, daytime activities took place at Mercerdale Park, while evening events and fireworks moved to Luther Burbank Park, with a shuttle serving the waterfront site. Luther Burbank occupies 77 acres on the northeast shore. The land was part of Calkins's East Seattle venture before becoming a parental school with farm work and study; brick school buildings erected in 1929 remain from that era. King County acquired the site for park use in 1969, and Mercer Island assumed its operation in 2003. An amphitheater, public shoreline, regional bike connection, and wooded land now occupy a site where the island's early steamboat settlement and institutional history meet Lake Washington.
