Mercersburg, PA

Mercersburg is a Franklin County borough four miles north of the Mason-Dixon line, at the eastern foot of Cove Mountain. The 2020 census counted 1,507 residents. The borough was incorporated in 1831 and named for General Hugh Mercer, but the town's deeper identity comes from the people and institutions that gathered around it. James Buchanan spent his boyhood here, Marshall College and a German Reformed seminary brought students and theologians in the 1800s, and Mercersburg Academy has occupied the old educational lane since 1893.

The historic district along Main and Seminary Streets keeps the borough's small center legible, while Cove Gap opens the landscape toward the mountain and Maryland line.
