Meridian, CA

Meridian is a Sutter County census-designated place on the Sacramento River, part of the Yuba City metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 304 residents. State Route 20 reaches the river at the Meridian Bridge, a historic steel swing bridge connecting Sutter and Colusa counties. The community sits at about 43 feet above sea level, in a flat Sacramento Valley landscape shaped by river water, fields, and levees. The bridge remains the visual hinge.

Meridian grew from a nineteenth-century river settlement where ferries and steamships carried people and goods through the Sacramento Valley. Much of the surrounding tule and swamp land was reclaimed after levees and the Sutter Bypass were built, turning flood-prone ground into productive farmland. Meridian School and the local elementary district remain part of the community’s civic structure. The place is small, but its map carries several large systems at once: the river crossing, the levees, the farm fields, and the road west toward Colusa and east toward the Yuba-Sutter region.
