Merrill, IA

Merrill grew where a road and the Floyd River meet in Plymouth County. The city carries the name of Samuel Merrill, Iowa’s seventh governor; settlers adopted it in 1872, and Merrill became an incorporated city on April 24, 1894. That gives the place a tidy bit of Iowa chronology: a river settlement first, a named town next, then a civic identity formalized as the county’s farm country developed around it. U.S. Route 75 puts Merrill on a north–south line, about 20 minutes north of Sioux City, while the Floyd keeps the town tied to the land beyond the pavement.

Le Mars Community School District serves local area public schools, connecting Merrill to the larger Plymouth County school map. The river is the town’s most distinctive physical thread, shaping the low ground and giving the community an identifiable edge.
