Mertztown, PA

Mertztown sits in Longswamp Township in Berks County, near Topton and the junction of Valley Road, Chestnut Street, Barclay Street, and the old railroad corridor. The settlement grew where the East Pennsylvania Railroad and Reading Railroad met; the Reading line remains in use under Norfolk Southern. Toad Creek runs east through the village toward the Little Lehigh Creek, adding a small watercourse to a landscape otherwise marked by roads, fields, and rail infrastructure.

The Mertz family name reaches back to Nicholas, David, and Peter Mertz, immigrants who arrived in Philadelphia in 1733 and helped establish Longswamp Church. Robert Mertz is credited with founding Mertztown in 1823, and the family’s presence stayed visible in local land records and institutions. The Mertztown train station now serves as the emblem of the Longswamp Township Historical Society, whose museum sits in Longswamp Township Park. The Peter Trexler Mansion, later a bed-and-breakfast, adds another layer of early architecture. Mertztown feels like a rail-and-farm village where old family names still sit close to the tracks.
