Metairie, LA

Veterans Memorial Boulevard, usually called "Vets" by locals, is the main commercial strip in Metairie. It stretches for miles with big-box stores, local restaurants, auto dealers, and Lakeside Shopping Center, the area's largest mall. While Vets handles daily commutes and shopping trips most of the year, it completely transforms every Carnival season. That is when suburban Mardi Gras krewes take over the roadway for days of parades, alongside Family Gras, a weekend festival across from the mall packed with outdoor concerts, food tents, and family activities.

For a quieter, historic vibe, head south to Old Metairie along Metairie Road. The road follows a high ground ridge that originally served as a Native American footpath long before modern subdivisions were built. Today, it is lined with live oaks, charming cottages, upscale clothing boutiques, and independent coffee shops. Even though Metairie is home to over 140,000 people and feels like a large city, it is an unincorporated part of Jefferson Parish directly bordering New Orleans.

Without an independent city hall, Metairie relies on Jefferson Parish to provide public services, library branches, park maintenance, and the vital drainage canals and pump stations that keep low-lying ground dry. Lafreniere Park is the favorite local gathering spot, offering paved running paths around a central lagoon, open green spaces, disc golf, and a huge holiday lights display every December. For quiet study, classes, or community events, residents head to the East Bank Regional Library on West Napoleon Avenue.

Other pockets of Metairie add plenty of local personality. Causeway Boulevard serves as the primary corporate corridor and leads straight to the 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge to the Northshore. Just off Causeway, the Fat City district mixes colorful murals with an eclectic collection of restaurants and casual bars. Sports fans will find the training facilities and headquarters for both the Saints and Pelicans on Airline Drive, while the historic lakefront pocket of Bucktown remains the top destination for boiled crawfish, fresh seafood markets, and sunset walks by the water.
