Metlakatla, AK

Set on Annette Island about 20 miles south of Ketchikan, Metlakatla is a close-knit Tsimshian community and the only federal Indian reservation in Alaska. Daily life revolves around the water, from commercial fishing and cannery shifts to catching the ferry or a floatplane across the sound. Carved totem poles, a traditional longhouse, and deep cultural roots stand right alongside local schools, stores, and health services. It is a peaceful, self-governing island town with a strong sense of identity and a slow, steady pace of life.
