Mexico, PA

Mexico is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in Walker Township, Juniata County, with the Juniata River along its southern edge. The local story reaches back to Captain James Patterson’s tract at the mouth of Doe Run. The village was once called New Mexico, and stone houses and a store appeared early in the nineteenth century; a post office was established in 1821. Mexico Cemetery, with burials recorded through 1871, is one of the older reminders of the settlement’s long history.

U.S. Routes 22 and 322 now run along the northeastern edge of the community, with Pennsylvania Route 75 providing the local connection. The roads follow the river valley toward Lewistown and Duncannon, while Tuscarora Mountain, farms, and forest shape the view beyond the highway. Walker Township’s Muskrat Springs offers boat access to the Juniata River, and Buttonwood Campground brings a seasonal river stop nearby. The Mexico Veterans Monument, raised for the village’s 250th anniversary, adds a newer marker to a place whose name is playful but whose roots are firmly tied to Pennsylvania’s river country.
