Michiana Shores, IN

Michiana Shores is a LaPorte County town on Lake Michigan, just south of the Michigan line and next to Michiana, Michigan, and Long Beach, Indiana. The 2020 census counted 306 residents. It is the only incorporated community in Springfield Township, so town government covers a narrow lakeshore settlement whose daily map includes beach frontage, wooded inland streets, and neighboring communities. Michigan City Area Schools serves the town, with Springfield Elementary and Krueger Middle School assigned to local students. Town planning ties shoreline, roads, utilities, and land use into one connected municipal conversation.

Before it became a lakeshore community, the inland part was Corymbo, a logging town on the Michigan Central Railroad in the 1860s and 1870s. Lumbermen and railroad employees lived there, and a post office operated from 1861 to 1880. In the 1920s, the Burgwald family sold land to the Long Beach Land Company; vacation development followed in the 1930s, including log cabins associated with Orphie Gotto and Clarence Mathias. Michiana Shores incorporated in 1947, leaving today's town with a built history that runs from timber and rail to lakeshore homes.
