Michigantown, IN

Michigantown is a Clinton County town laid out along the Michigan Road, Indiana's early route between Madison and Michigan City. Joseph Hill and Robert Edwards platted the town in 1830 with lots on both sides of the road, and later additions carried the settlement north toward the Frankfort and Kokomo railroad. The name still points to that original route, which connected southern Indiana to Lake Michigan and is now recognized as a historic byway.

Rail remains part of Michigantown's map. A Norfolk Southern line crosses the north edge of town between Frankfort and Kokomo, following the transportation corridor that drew the Marion, Kokomo and Frankfort Electric Railroad through the community in 1912. The town sits in Michigan Township, with local roads connecting it to Clinton County's larger centers. Michigantown is a place where an early road, later rail lines, and a small town grid still meet in one stretch of Indiana farmland. Those layers give the town a clear transportation story in a compact setting.
