Middle Amana, IA

Middle Amana is the biggest of seven Amana Colonies villages, laid out across Iowa River country as part of a communal settlement established on 26,000 acres. The villages were spaced roughly a mile or two apart, with shared schools, churches, kitchens, farms, and workshops. Middle Amana’s 1881 inventory sounds like a whole town at work: woolen mill, starch factory, machine and wagon shops, blacksmith, printing and bindery, brickyard, general store, school, and meetinghouse.

That wool work still gives Middle Amana its strongest individual detail. The Amana Woolen Mill is Iowa’s only remaining textile mill, and its canal—hand dug from the Iowa River—once carried water to the mill. The historic building still has weaving equipment, so this isn’t just a name on a colony map; you can trace the old communal economy through the machinery and raceway. Amana Elementary is in the village, with Clear Creek–Amana middle and high schools in Tiffin. Middle Amana is where the Amana story becomes concrete: mill, canal, village spacing, and school all close together.
